Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Australia and Oceania. It is the seven summit in the Seven summits project (7 summits on 7 tallest mountains on 7 Continets). Carstensz Pyramid is situated in west Papua (now named Papua Province Indonesia). This Indonesian Province was called Irian Jaya till 2005.
It lies in New Guinea, which is the world’s second largest island.

Expedition to Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m) is one of the most exotic mountaineering trips imaginable. It is considered the highest peak of the seventh continent (Australia/Oceania) for climbers attempting the Seven Summits.

The mountain, locally known as Puncak Jaya or “Victory Peak” is located in the western center highlands of West Papua (formerly known as Irian Jaya), which has cultural richness. The locals have had relatively little western influence, the 'stone age' Dani lifestyle and rituals have been able to continue in a somewhat authentic manner.

Today most of the climbers call it Carstensz Pyramid after Jan Carstensz, a Dutch explorer, who was the first European to sight the peak of the mountain in the 1623. In 1962, Heinrich Harrier became the first foreigner to reach the summit of this peak.

Although it is on the equator, at 16,024 feet it is high enough that we had snow and hail on the summit. It also had lots of rain.

Carstensz Pyramid is certainly more challenging than the Kosciuszko of Australia. Its remoteness, jungle environment and technical rock climbing make it a de facto member of the "Seven Summits

Puncak Jaya, sometimes called Mount Carstensz or the Carstensz Pyramid, is the highest mountain on the island of New Guinea, on the Australia-New Guinea continent and in Oceania. It is the highest point between the Himalaya and the Andes and the highest island peak in the world. The peak is located in what is variously called the Sudirman Range or the Dugunduguoo, in the western central highlands of Papua, the Indonesian western half of the island, and is the highest peak in the country.

Puncak Jaya was originally called ‘Carstensz Pyramid’, after Dutch explorer Jan Carstensz who first sighted the glaciers on the peak of the mountain on a rare clear day in 1623 (Carstensz was ridiculed in Europe when he said he had seen snow near the equator). This name is still used among mountaineers. Although the snowfield of Puncak Jaya was reached as early as 1909 by a Dutch explorer, Hendrik A. Lorentz, the peak was not climbed until 1962, by an expedition led by the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer (of Seven Years in Tibet fame) with three friends, Temple, Kippax and Huizenga.

Climb the highest peak in Oceania and one of the most exotic and challenging world's famous SEVEN SUMMITS; The Carstensz Pyramid 4.884 M at Irian Jaya, Indonesia. And opportunity to spend time in the central highland area visiting the famous Dani people, still very much living in the Stone Age to enjoy their amazing cultures and discover the beauty and wonders of Papua Island.

Carstensz Pyramid is a large limestone, we climb the mountain via its north face which joins the summit ridge before proceeding to the summit. Most of the climb is scrambling, but there are technical sections up to 5.8 in difficulty. We will fix ropes on much of the route to gain the summit ridge, which also direct us on the descent. The summit ridge is knife-edged ridge with some really interesting climbing. You'll need to have some rock climbing experience prior to  coming to Carstensz Pyramid.

Further regarding the climb, there are 2 parts of the climb, first we will climb up thru the north face of Carstensz Wall thru normal route where we have fixed many ropes for the ascend and descend ways. The  climb on the north wall of CP is about 500 M where required jummaring up. Free climb is not recommended in term of safety and using a jummar  is an obligatory. Once we are moving onward on summit ridge, we will once crossing the huge gap on tyrolean to speeds up the ascent to the summit of Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 M).
